Dear West Coast Folk Dancers!
With the postponement of LEP 2021 to 2022, the Seattle LEP board has asked our west coast folk dancers to please put together a multi-frame folk dance performance video that they would put on various social media sites to promote the festival. They would love to publish the video this April.
There is tons of information below about the project, so please read through and feel free to ask me any questions.
We have put together a medley of four simple social dances / folk dances: Karoobushka, Meremeeste valss, Tuustepp, Perekonna valss. You can watch the videos below.
In order to make it easier for everyone to learn the steps, we filmed the videos so that the camera that you will use to record yourself is on the curtain on the other side of Janne and Kalev. When they face the “camera that is recording them”, their backs are to you. As you watch the videos and learn the steps, it is like you are standing behind them. This orientation has made it easier for our Portland dancers to learn the dances.
WOMEN:
1) "Tutorial" video where I slowly go through and teach the women's steps to the dances:
https://youtu.be/ijBwAifZJVE
2) Performance video of Janne dancing straight through the medley:
https://youtu.be/48Y2Kh3GytQ
3) mp3 (backing track) of the actual music, with my prompting of women's steps, that you will use to dance to and record yourself:

MEN:
4) "Tutorial" video where I slowly go through and teach the men's steps to the dances:
https://youtu.be/AvDUFIuFVio
5) Performance video of Kalev dancing straight through the medley:
https://youtu.be/OIMPIeIH9sE
6) mp3 (backing track) of the actual music, with my prompting of men's steps, that you will use to dance to and record yourself:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/t30hpurdk4636zg/Kar-Mer-Tuu-Per%20-%20Men%20-%20directions%20-%20v2.mp3?dl=0
COUPLES – only if you are in the same household (no masks, please).
7) Performance video of Janne and Kalev dancing straight through the medley:
https://youtu.be/t-sSfLhLuhU
8) mp3 (backing track) of the actual music with no prompts, that couples will use to dance and record themselves:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ai7uswpavdr2q1e/Kar-Mer-Tuu-Per%20-%20instrumental.mp3?dl=0
When everyone’s videos have been sent in, we will mute all audio tracks to get rid of my prompting and replace the audio with a clean version.
VIDEO IN LANDSCAPE MODE; VIDEO RESOLUTION:
Everyone: please record yourself in landscape mode.
It would be best if you could do the recording in 1920 x 1080 (i.e. “full hd”) resolution, if you can. Don’t be too concerned if you can’t figure it out! (This would make it easier to do cropping during video editing.)
If you are dancing together with a partner, please record yourselves twice: once with each of you by yourselves and once with you dancing together with your partner. This will give us more flexibility to create an exciting performance!
When you record yourself, please play the mp3 backing track so that you can hear it well, and that it comes through on your recording, so we can synchronize everyone’s recordings.
DRESS:
Women: folk costume skirt, black t-shirt/blouse, black tights, black shoes.
Men: black (or dark) long pants, black t-shirt, folk costume vest, black (or dark) shoes.
ITEMS YOU WILL NEED:
1. A computer or mobile device to play the track so you can dance to it.
2. A device to video record yourself dancing. This can be a computer with a webcam, a mobile phone or tablet, or a camera that can record digital videos.
Please place the recording device at the correct distance from you so that it will film you from head to toe and make sure that you will not dance out of the camera frame. You might have to play around with seeing how much you can move. (I put pieces of tape on the floor).
SUBMITTING YOUR VIDEO:
Once you have your video recording done, the recording needs to get to us. It will most likely be too big to send as an email attachment. That means your recording has to be uploaded to some sort of cloud storage (e.g. Google Drive, DropBox, OneDrive, Box, etc) by you. If you have gmail email, you have Google Drive (it comes along with gmail).
It would great if you could upload your video recording to whatever cloud storage you have, and then send me a link to the recording. We will then download the video and let you know when we’ve got it, so you can delete the copy in your cloud storage, to reclaim storage space.
Please complete your video and send it to me by March 21 so we have time to put this together and give to the LEP board by April.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask me! Happy dancing!
